More wolfies

I've really been trying to improve my sketching lately, and I've had a lot of fun just drawing wolves in different poses and actions. I still don't have the final sketch for class yet though, which stinks because I'm supposed to have it for tomorrow!

This is the card I made for Dave this year. I thought it was cute :)

This is my first foray into repeat pattern/surface design, and how much do I love it!!? This is what I ultimately want to get into. I really should have duel enrolled in Fibers and Illustration, but since I graduate in 3 months, I guess I just have to teach myself the Fibers stuff.

I've actually applied for Working Class Studio here at SCAD, where students work under supervision to produce designs for product. I attended a mass interview today, and they told us that we should know by Wednesday who got in. (please please, please let it be me!!!)

Anyway, I created these patterns after a theme (get it? the origin of yarn! I love yarn...) and I would love to do more surface design. I just need to keep myself glued to the sketchbook, which is tough when I'm at the end of a quarter.

So, that's the direction I hope I'm headed :)

Fishy Fish!

So my big project last quarter in Allan Drummond's children's book class was writing and illustrating my own book. My mom helped me brainstorm through all of my bad ideas, and finally came up with doing a collage/cut paper fish book. It's pretty simple, about a day in the life of a fish, with whimsical characters that flow through the pages. This spread seems to be everyone's favorite, mine included. The title page turned out pretty nifty, too!

I also got to learn how to bind my own dummy book, which was AWESOME! Too bad there's no more time for me to take the book binding class. I think that would have been so cool.

Someday I'll finish the pages that didn't go to final, and send it to a publisher.

Dawn Treader

This is a book cover I did for my Portfolio class this quarter. I had done cut paper for my children's book last quarter, but decided to take it digital this time. Less mess, and fewer bits of paper all over my floor. I just scanned in all my textures and papers, played with color and added some stitch marks for a quilt effect. I really love this piece right now, but I'm kind of done with digital collage for the moment. I want to get back into my inks and paints and get dirty.

I'm still a novice with type, but I'm trying. I'd love to take a graphic design course, but then again, I've always got Dave :)

Our advertising class took a field trip to Oatland Island Wildlife Center here in Savannah last week. We each have to design a poster, and there's a good possibility that some of the better ones will be chosen to be used at the center.

At Oatland Island, they rescue hurt or former experimental animals and nurse them back to health. Each animal has their own exhibit, and I loved when we visited the wolves. We actually got to pet them (through a chain link fence) and watch them interacting with the guy that takes care of them. They were like huge dogs, it was amazing! I even got licked on the hand by one of these huge creatures! So, I'm going to do my poster highlighting these cuddly beasts.

Fresh start

It's been a while since I've posted, and I've decided to completely start over. Now that I have a better idea of where my work is going (not that I will ever actually "get there") I wanted to overhaul the blog and put up some completely new work. I'm taking Advertising Illustration with Kurt Vargo and Portfolio with Julie Lieberman this quarter, and I feel like I'm finally getting comfortable with myself, with how I work, and with the outcomes. As always, I am jumping around with regards to medium, subject, purpose...I won't rest until I've explored every avenue available to me. So, enjoy the journey. If you get lost, well, chances are I am too.
